Hello, I’m Dr. Karen Yanez
Licensed Psychologist
I’ve known I wanted to be a psychologist since middle school…and it all started with Freaky Friday (yes, the movie). I saw Jamie Lee Curtis’s character and thought, “THIS. IS. IT.” Of course, my 13-year-old self had no idea what being a psychologist actually meant, but somehow I knew this was the path I was meant to follow.
That curiosity and drive led me to the University of Texas at El Paso, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and English Literature, and later my master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. After graduating, I moved to Seattle, Washington, and worked as a child and family therapist. I was fortunate to serve as the primary mental health therapist in the development and launch of a new Adolescent Clinic, an experience that quickly confirmed how much I love working with this age group. Their humor, honesty, and openness make every session rewarding and meaningful. While this work was fulfilling, I knew I wanted to continue growing and expanding my impact, which led me to pursue a doctorate degree.
I completed my doctorate at California Southern University, and during my internship and postdoctoral fellowship, I discovered my true niche: supporting teens preparing to transition into the next phase of life, as well as young adults navigating the ups and downs of “adulting.” Every session reminds me why I chose this path. I truly feel grateful to walk alongside teens and young adults as they find their voice and navigate life’s messy, confusing, and growing pains of life.
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active through walking my dogs, yoga, and hiking, as well as crafting, collecting trinkets, reading, watching movies, and spending time with my loved ones.
Why Willow & Fox?
Willow & Fox represents the balance between staying grounded and learning how to move through change.
In nature, willows and foxes share the same environments, places that require flexibility, awareness, and adaptation. The willow bends without breaking, rooted while responsive. The fox moves with curiosity and intention, adjusting to what’s ahead. Together, they reflect the heart of my approach to therapy: helping you stay connected to who you are while learning how to navigate life’s transitions in a way that feels aligned and authentic.
